Video Transcript
Welcome and thank you for joining us for your latest Social Security update.
Today we are discussing major improvements at the Social Security Administration that are slashing weight times and clearing backlogs.
These changes mean faster access to your benefits and quicker financial relief for millions of Americans.
Keep watching as we explain how these upgrades could make your experience with Social Security smoother and less stressful.
Social Security has made significant progress in reducing weight times and clearing backlogs, which is already having a real impact for seniors and other beneficiaries.
Most notably, the agency completed over 3.1 million Social Security Fairness Act payments to eligible recipients 5 months ahead of schedule, providing earlier financial relief for families who depend on retirement, disability, or supplemental security income benefits.
For those who have struggled with long phone hold times, new telephone system upgrades in 841 field offices covering 70% of locations have reduced the average wait for the main 800 number to just 13 minutes, down from last year by 35%.
And now 90% of calls are resolved through automated self-service or call back options.
Disability claimants are seeing meaningful improvements as well with the initial claims backlog dropping by 25% from 1.2 million cases last summer to 950,000 cases today and the number of pending disability hearings reaching a historic low of 276,000 with average wait times now 60 days shorter than last year.
In-person visitors to Social Security offices are experiencing about 10% shorter weights.
And the upgraded My Social Security online portal, launched in July, now offers 247 access for real-time benefit verification, application tracking, and secure document uploads, making it easier for all beneficiaries to manage their accounts without needing to visit or call.
These improvements are designed to help retirees access earned benefits faster, make disability decisions more timely, and provide SSI recipients with more reliable service, setting the stage for even more enhancements as the agency continues its overhaul.
With Social Security reducing the disability claims backlog by 25% and cutting average phone wait times to just 13 minutes, now is the time to set up your My Social Security account and check your benefit status online.
Consider using the new self-service features to save time and avoid unnecessary office visits.
